Money raised goes directly to fund research in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

The beginning of the Peggy Lewis Memorial Walk

Peggy Lewis was just 43 years of age when she died from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in April of 1991. Pulmonary Fibrosis is abnormal formations of fibre-like scar tissue in the lungs. If the disease progresses, lung tissues thicken and become stiff, which makes breathing difficult. The term idiopathic means “of unknown origin”, so there is much to learn about this condition and how to treat it. Research offers the best chance of finding out more about Pulmonary Fibrosis and all the money raised will go toward learning more about this disease.

During the decade, research monies have been given annually to research centers across Canada where Pulmonary Fibrosis (including IPF) is being studied.

Since Peggy’s death, her family and friends have organized two annual memorial walks for research - one in St. John’s, the other in Labrador West. The St. John’s walk is a 50 km stretch from St. John’s to Holyrood - Peggy’s original hometown. The Labrador West walk involves a 25km stretch around the communities of Labrador City and Wabush.
